Well we escaped the earthquake and crossed the state line to Arizona where we headed straight through Phoenix to our apartment at The Marriott Canyon Resort which is another of their 5 star properties.
However the drive through the Mohave desert is always fabulous to me - for a desert (which you would expect to be boringly similar) the scenery changes every few miles. The colours in the fiery hot sun also change as the rock formations reflect the sunshine and there are pictures to be taken everywhere if you could only stand the heat for more than 5 minutes!
Some of the journey is on roads that have no bends for over 50 miles - just straight lines through the desert.
Here is a map of our route yesterday.
However all that was yesterday - today is for spending long lazy hours in the "lazy river" pool and just getting chilled out and keeping cool.
There are 6 pools in the grounds of this luxury hotel, but our favourite is the Lazy River which slowly propels you around in a huge rubber ring. But the biggest problem about this pool is getting into the ring in the first place!
Carolyn has finally mastered it as you will see in the video below - but her modesty prevents me posting proof that she has not always jumped in so easily.

However for some of us - staying in the ring is the major issue - especially with two "rubber ring terrorists" in the lazy river with me! Kay & Fiona decided that Dad was getting too "lazy" and had fallen asleep - so flipped me!
Here is some video of us fooling around in the sunshine and the desert heat - the temperature today topped at 112°F, a little too hot to play golf in I think...
Time to get back to the apartment for a cool glass of wine, and one of Carolyn's specially cooked meals which have been such a huge change from our usual food choices in America.
The fact that the Marriott apartments have 2 huge double bedrooms and a working kitchen makes this type of self catering really simple.
Tomorrow it's time to visit the Old West....
