The first thing I noticed was that Venice was 10 times larger than I had imagined before arriving.
We were very lucky that our Baboo flight from Nice landed in clear skies and we got some great views of Venice and the surrounding islands.
Although the view didn't mean much to us as we flew in, I can now look at the pictures and pick out all the landmarks and buildings that we were later to visit.
This is undoubtably a beautiful city - and perhaps we visited at a good time because the stories we had heard of the smells from the canals and overcrowding in St Marks Square were largely not our experience.
On arriving by bus from the airport we had to find our hotel - of course it had not dawned on us before we got there that Venice is on the water and walking to a hotel with luggage over countless bridges is not so easy!
However by luck more than by planning, our hotel - The Sofitel - was one bridge away from the central bus station and railway station. So with just a minor struggle up and down the steps, we arrived!
The hotel was very pleasant and the rooms were styled in typical Venetian decor - so after quickly unpacking we went to explore the city.
The temperature in Venice was at least 10°C cooler than the French Riviera, but clear blue skies and sunshine meant that we still saw the city at its best. Just as well we brought some warmer clothes with us...
This is a view down the "street" where we were staying.
