We explore West Maui

We decide on a day of exploration and head off with guide book in hand for West Maui.

We had read that this was a remote and unspoiled part of Hawaii because the road was "challenging" and unsuitable for tour coaches.

The map below shows the route we took - we were on the anti clockwise route around this part of the island.

"Challenging" was an understatement!

For several miles the road is cut out from the edge of the cliffs and the road is quite often only wide enough for single file traffic - so if you meet another car coming around a blind hairpin bend one of you has the unenviable task of reversing to a space where 2 cars can pass, whilst clinging to the edge of a cliff (with no safety barriers!)

However as promised the views and scenery are spectacular as hopefully you will see from these pictures.

At one point on our trip we came across a small stand at the side of the road advertising "The Best Banana Bread On The Planet" - how could we resist the challenge! (the whole loaf you see in Kay's hands was eaten in 5 minutes!)

About half way around the Kahekili Highway we came across a trail down a rocky path to the coastline. The attraction was a strange freak of nature where a hole in the lava rock caused the pounding ocean waves to come shooting up - sending water 50 feet in the air.

It was well worth the long hike down the trail to see nature in action.
