Concert on the lawn under the stars....

Today Fiona and I had our (now) regular snorkel swim on the coral reef on the beach outside our hotel.

There were no turtles today - but hundreds of tropical fish swimming inches from our masks.

However the afternoon and evening were dominated by our visit to the M.A.C.C venue in Kahului the main town on Maui.

The state of Hawaii is celebrating 50 years of statehood this year and there are several celebratory events throughout the year - however the one that attracted us was a concert by the group "America" who were performing on the lawn of the venue in an outdoor concert "under the stars".

The late afternoon had a 50th Anniversary carnival where shaved ice, candy floss, popcorn, hot dogs (all the good stuff) were sold at 50 cents each. Of course we had to partake in each of the above - just to check how they tasted (and after all we are Scottish and can't say no to a bargain!).

We had bought our tickets but were not entirely sure what "on the lawn" meant, but the description was accurate - we were on a manicured lawn in front of a stage as sunset came and nightfall brought the stars out (as advertised).

Laura, Kay and Fiona have been listening to America subliminally (from Dad's records, CD's and iPod) for years and could easily sing along to at least 70% of the songs that were played. But even if they had known none of the music, the event was really special with the entire audience stretched out sipping beer, wine and sodas whilst watching the 2 support acts and later the main event.

Most of the people at the concert were quite obviously local Maui residents - and we may have been the only "foreigners" there - but it was so obvious that these people live such laid back lives and all seem to know each other.

The girls said that it felt like they were transported back to Woodstock! Maybe that was because the average concert goer looked like an older hippy in an Hawaiian shirt - but we all had a great time enjoying the music under the stars.

Here are a few pictures.
