The scenery changes dramatically every 20 miles as you will see from the pictures.
These first two pictures are taken as we crossed Saddle Road which is the main road past Mauna Kea the 14,000 foot peak - more of which later.
Once on the coast road we came across several places which might be considered "typical" Hawaii i.e massive waterfalls, massive waves pounding into hidden coves and green rainforest conditions - very different from the burnt and dry west coast.
Akaka Falls is famous for the massive waterfall as you can see here.
Further down the coast we came across a detour along a narrow road which hogged the coastline - and found a trail that led down to a fantastic little bay that had spectacular surf which pounded the rocks and was very dramatic.
Here are some of the pictures from this hike.
