The castle was originally built in 1350 during the reign of Edward III and the structure has been largely retained since it was built over 700 hundred years ago.
The castle has now become a 5 star hotel and extremely popular for weddings. Apparently every weekend is booked by wedding parties for the next 2 years!
Our room in the hotel was very baroque in styling and contrary to what you might think, very warm and cosy.
As you can see from the pictures there are steps "up" to the window (not a conventional way to see outside) and an arched door into the bathroom.
A chilled bottle of champagne was awaiting us and we set about relaxing and enjoying our surroundings and the grounds around the castle.
Sadly there were no ghosts at this hotel - which given its age is surprising, but the Witchery Hotel in Edinburgh in November will hopefully live up to its promise of ghostly visions!
They did have suits of armour scattered around the hall and stairways though as you can see here.
It was decided that we should have "high tea" and so were presented each with a feast that could have fed a family.
Needless to say we both finished every bite!
The food was served in the Drawing Room which you can see here.
Dinner at the hotel was a real highlight - food and service were impeccable and one of the finest meals I have ever eaten.
Highly recommended to anyone wishing to enjoy fine food in an ancient castle.
The next morning before leaving to collect our new Q7 Audi we were taken for a tour of the battlements which gave us great views of the surrounding countryside.
A really great experience and one we will have to partake in again some day.
